Community News

Thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, World Vision was able to work alongside communities to accomplish the following in 2011.

Christian Commitment

  • Worked with local churches to start 50 children's worship groups, giving children opportunities to express their faith through worship and prayer.

Economic Development

  • Worked with MedNET, a microfinance institution affiliated with World Vision, to help entrepreneurs access small business loans.

Healthcare

  • Formed school health clubs to promote healthy hygiene and sanitation practices among schoolchildren.
  • Worked to reduce the prevalence of diarrhea by teaching families how to construct "tippy-taps," simple hand-washing systems made from local materials.
  • Organized malaria-prevention campaigns in 28 communities, reducing the number of malaria cases.
  • Provided nutrition education for mothers, demonstrating how to prepare healthy meals using locally available ingredients.
  • Trained village health workers to monitor children's nutritional status and promote healthy feeding practices.
  • Partnered with local health agencies to immunize and deworm 1,368 children.

Water and Sanitation

  • Covered five springs and one borehole well to help protect the water supply from contamination by livestock and provide clean water for 240 households.

Education

  • Involved schools in an educational newspaper program, which strengthens children's writing skills and improves access to learning resources.

Child Rights

  • Held community forms to promote child rights and raise awareness of child protection issues.

Birthday Celebration

  • Over 4,000 children participated in a time of prayer, played games, sang, danced, and received books, balls, pens, and pencils.
