In 2015, World Vision embarked on an ambitious journey to help end the global water crisis. Our goal was clear: for every person, everywhere we work to have clean water access. With your unwavering support, we have been making tremendous strides, reaching one new person with clean water every 10 seconds. Yes, that’s right — every 10 seconds!
RWANDA: A BEACON OF CHANGE
In 2018, our commitment took a groundbreaking turn with a bold initiative in Rwanda. Faced with the challenge of over a million people in the country lacking access to clean water, we dared to dream big. We made a commitment to our donors, partners, and the government of Rwanda to reach 1 million people with clean water within just five years. Thanks to your support, this dream turned into a reality!
We are thrilled to share that we have exceeded the commitment we made by reaching 1,181,958 people in Rwanda with clean water!
Over this five-year effort, we saw the number of people gaining access to clean water increase from an average of 50,000 a year to over 200,000 each year. During this same period, we also exceeded our health goals by upgrading healthcare facilities with clean water, and by equipping healthcare facilities with handwashing facilities.
Transforming lives, one drop at a time
The story of Seraphina (right) exemplifies the life-changing impact of clean water access. Along with her daughter Vanessa (left), their daily struggle for water involved a two-hour trek up a steep hill. This was not just physically exhausting but also a barrier to Vanessa’s education. With the arrival of clean water, Vanessa’s life was transformed — with no more late arrivals at school, her grades soared, ranking her second in her class. This is the kind of change you are a part of!
Innovation and collaboration: Keys to success
Our success in Rwanda was not just about lasting clean water; it was about innovation, collaboration, and learning. The lessons we learned are now fueling our efforts in other regions. We’re excited to apply these insights as we aim to reach 30 million more people with clean water by 2030, including everyone, everywhere we work in Zambia and Honduras.

The triumph in Rwanda has sparked a wave of momentum. Other funders and the Rwandan government are extending support to ensure clean water access across the country. Rwanda is on track to be the first country in sub-Saharan Africa where everyone has access to clean water.
